One of our must-do tours in Chile! Located in the heart of the Andes, Cerro Zapaleri stands majestically as a silent witness to the history and geography of South America. But, beyond being an imposing rock formation, this hill is a very important geographical point. It demarks the borders of Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina.

The Zapaleri, standing tall at 5,638 m.a.s.l., is more than just a geographical landmark. It poses a challenge for mountaineers and adventurers who are eager to conquer its heights and witness a panoramic view of three nations from its top. Furthermore, this mountain is surrounded by stories and local legends that speak of its mysteries and the spirits that inhabit it.

Indigenous communities from the region have considered Zapaleri as a sacred place since ancient times, a connecting pillar between earth and heaven.

If you are someone who loves adventure and wishes to explore places where nature and history blend magically, Cerro Zapaleri is the perfect destination for you!

Starting an unforgettable adventure at 10 a.m., the route along the CH-27 road presents us with the imposing Monjes de la Pacana, as well as the mysterious salt flats of Aguas Calientes and Quepiaco.

After two hours, we’ll enter a dirt road that leads us across the majestic Altiplano. During this journey, we’ll find mirror lagoons and the renowned Zapaleri River. In the evening, around 5 p.m., we’ll set up our base camp: a magical enclave steeped in legends and echoes of the past. Here, a warm dinner awaits us before we dive into our dreams under a starry sky in our tents.

Second day will start at 3 a.m. with a light breakfast to give us the necessary energy for the great climb. Although the hill doesn’t present major technical challenges, its extension requires endurance and determination. With enthusiasm and a steady pace, we hope to reach the top in about 6 or 7 hours, finally encountering the emblematic tripartite landmark.

Our return trip will take about 3 to 4 hours. Upon returning to the vehicle, around 4 p.m., we’ll be rewarded with a well-deserved meal and then continue our return to San Pedro de Atacama.

The difference in altitude we face is approximately 3,900 ft. This route is ideal for those who may not have extensive climbing experience but are in excellent physical condition. It’s also the perfect setting for mountaineers looking to acclimatize for even higher challenges in the region.

We suggest wearing warm clothes, as temperatures can be cold at high altitudes, trekking shoes that provide support and traction, sunscreen to protect you from the intense sun, and, of course, at least four liters of water to keep you hydrated during the climbing.

If you have questions about the itinerary, what to bring for trekking, and even about the weather in San Pedro de Atacama, just contact us!

Please note that this tour has a duration of two days.
