How to get to San Pedro de Atacama from Santiago?

If you’re planning to visit San Pedro de Atacama on your vacation, we’ll show you step by step how to get there from Santiago, Chile.
This magical town, located in the heart of the Atacama Desert, is one of the most stunning tourist destinations in South America, known for its moon-like landscapes, star-filled skies, and ancient culture. Here are the options to get there easily.

How to get to San Pedro de Atacama

Option 1: Fly from Santiago to Calama (the fastest and most comfortable)

The most common way to get there is by taking a flight from Arturo Merino Benítez Airport (SCL) in Santiago to El Loa Airport (CJC) in the city of Calama.

Once you land in Calama, you’re only 100 km away from San Pedro de Atacama (about 1 hour and 30 minutes by road). You can get there in the following ways:

Car rental: Available at the airport. Gives you the freedom to explore on your own, as the roads are in good condition and well signposted.

Shared transfer: Can be booked online or directly at the airport. Ideal for solo travelers or couples.

Private transfer: Perfect for families or groups who prefer comfort.

Option 2: Take a bus from Santiago

Although this is a much longer option and only recommended if you’re on a tight budget and have plenty of time, you can get there by bus.
You can take a long-distance bus from Santiago to Calama, which takes between 22 and 24 hours. Then, from Calama, you’ll need to take a transfer or a local bus to San Pedro.

Option 3: Drive from Santiago

You can drive from Santiago, but keep in mind it’s about 1,600 km and roughly 20 hours of continuous driving.
This option might be interesting if you’re planning a road trip through northern Chile, but it’s not the most practical choice for a short vacation.
