What is the Chilean summer like?
Summer in Chile generally runs from December to March. During those months, the country fills with light and temperatures vary a lot depending on the region:

Northern zone (Atacama and surroundings)
Dry days, almost permanently blue skies, and daytime temperatures that usually range between 25°C and 32°C, with cool nights. It hardly ever rains, which makes it a paradise for those looking for guaranteed sunshine.
Central zone (Santiago, Valparaíso, vineyards)
Warm summers, with afternoons around 28°–32°C and pleasant evenings, ideal for terraces, walks, and outdoor activities. This is where you experience the classic Chilean “city-and-beach summer.”
Southern zone (Lakes, forests, and northern Patagonia)
Milder temperatures, between 18°C and 26°C, lots of greenery and fresh air. It is the perfect place for those who want to escape intense heat without giving up the sun.
People in summer: more terraces, more beach, more going out
In summer, the pace of life in Chile changes:
- Cities fill up with terraces, ice-cream shops, and outdoor cafés.
- Families take the chance to have barbecues, go on short trips to the beach, or escape to the mountains.
- Days are longer, and you can feel it in the atmosphere: there is more life in the streets, more music, more conversations that go on late into the night.
In tourist destinations, it is common to find Chileans and foreigners sharing the same group; the vibe is friendly, relaxed, and quite informal.
Summer flavors: what people eat when it is hot
Talking about summer in Chile also means talking about food. Some seasonal classics are:
- Seafood or cheese empanadas on the beach.
- Ceviches and fresh fish along the coast.
- Humitas and pastel de choclo, traditional dishes made with fresh corn.
- Salads with avocado, sweet tomatoes, and plenty of seasonal fruit.
And of course, artisan ice cream, fresh juices, and chilled white or sparkling wines.
Favorite Chilean summer destinations
Because the country is so long, people’s favorite summer spots vary a lot depending on the traveler.
Some of the classics are:
- Central-coast beaches: Valparaíso, Viña del Mar, Reñaca, and nearby small coves combine sea, nightlife, and gastronomy.
- Lake and volcano district: Pucón, Puerto Varas, Frutillar, and the surrounding areas are ideal for those who love nature, outdoor sports, and lush green landscapes.
- Wine routes in the valleys near Santiago, perfect for one- or two-day getaways.
And of course, one of the great highlights of the Chilean summer:
San Pedro de Atacama: desert summer and its lagoons
If there is one place where summer is experienced in a completely different way, it is San Pedro de Atacama.
Here the heat is dry, the sky is intensely blue, and the landscape feels like another planet.
In just a few days you can:
- Visit high-altitude lagoons surrounded by mountains and volcanoes.
- See flamingos in salt lagoons that look like giant mirrors.
- Float in highly saline lagoons, feel the silence of the desert, and enjoy sunsets where the sky changes color minute by minute.
The lagoons are, without a doubt, one of the great treasures of summer in San Pedro.
The Chilean summer is not just one single summer: it’s many different summers within the same country.
And with Caminandes, we can help you choose the one that fits you best:
whether it’s floating in a high-altitude lagoon in San Pedro, sailing on a southern lake, or raising a glass by the Pacific at sunset.
