1. Leon, tell us a bit about your story. What led you to leave Brazil and settle in Chile?
“From a very young age, I have always felt a deep connection with nature. During my travels through South America, I arrived in Chile and was amazed by the diversity of its landscapes. The Atacama Desert and the Andes Mountains captivated me immediately. I decided to leave Brazil and settle here, seeking not only a new home but also the opportunity to share the beauty of this place with others.”
2. What was it about the Atacama Desert and the Andes Mountains that inspired you to become a mountain guide?

“The Atacama Desert is a unique place in the world, with its surreal landscapes and a sky that connects you to the depths of the universe. The Andes Mountains, on the other hand, offer a majestic presence that truly inspires me. Becoming a mountain guide allowed me not only to explore these places but also to help others experience their magic. Every excursion is an opportunity to connect with nature and share stories about the local culture.”

3. Since founding Caminandes with Paula, what have been the biggest challenges and achievements you have experienced in the tourism industry?

“One of the biggest challenges has been adapting to fluctuations in tourism, especially during the pandemic. However, we have also managed to build a community of passionate travelers who value authentic experiences. Our focus on sustainable tourism has been a major achievement, and seeing our clients enjoy the beauty of Chile is what motivates us the most.”

4. How has tourism in San Pedro de Atacama evolved in recent years, and what trends have you noticed among tourists visiting the region?

“In recent years, we have seen a growing interest in sustainable tourism and personalized experiences. Tourists are looking for more than just landscapes; they want to connect with the local culture and learn about the region’s history. We have also noticed an increase in adventure tourism, with more people interested in activities such as hiking and high-altitude trekking, which is one of our agency’s specialties. Every week, we conquer the highest peaks of the desert, such as the Láscar Volcano or the Licancabur Volcano.”

5. With Caminandes’ recent expansion to Santiago, what opportunities do you see to showcase Chile’s diversity and beauty to visitors?

“Santiago is a gateway to many of Chile’s natural and cultural wonders. With our expansion, we can offer tourists a more complete experience, combining Santiago’s vibrant urban life with excursions to places like Valparaíso, the central coast, and, of course, the Atacama Desert. There is so much to explore and discover in Chile, and we are excited to be part of that experience.”

6. Lastly, what advice would you give to tourists considering a visit to San Pedro de Atacama and Santiago? What shouldn’t they miss?

“I would tell them to take their time to enjoy each place. In San Pedro de Atacama, they shouldn’t miss the Valley of the Moon and the Tatio Geysers; these are unforgettable experiences. In Santiago, I recommend exploring the Lastarria or Italia neighborhoods and enjoying the local gastronomy. And most importantly, connect with the people and the culture; that’s what truly makes a trip special.”

We are excited to see how Caminandes continues to grow and showcase the beauty of San Pedro de Atacama and Santiago to the world. Thank you, Leon, for sharing your story with us!
