Heritage Route: Pomaire and Isla Negra – Discover the pottery village and the house museum of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda

General Description: Just 40 minutes from Santiago begins our journey to the town of Pomaire. Its main attraction is the pottery workshops found throughout the village. One of its main streets, Roberto Bravo, is where you can find handicrafts made of clay and enjoy traditional Chilean dishes such as pastel de choclo and empanadas. The ceramics are characterized by their reddish hue and smooth, shiny surface. Their pottery tradition dates back to before the arrival of the Spanish. You’ll find vessels, pans, decorations, and ornaments, including the renowned “chanchitos,” piggy banks shaped like three-legged pigs that are said to bring good luck.    You’ll have the opportunity to participate in this wonderful craft by creating your own clay pieces.   Then, our trip continues to the central coast of the Fifth Region to enjoy Isla Negra. Here we find Pablo Neruda’s House Museum, with its corners filled with poetry, treasures, and art from Chile’s Nobel Prize winner.

“The Pacific Ocean was coming out of the map. There was no place to put it. It was so big, disordered, and blue that it wouldn’t fit anywhere. So they left it in front of my window” – Pablo Neruda
